Ethical Guidelines & Policies

The Bingham Journal adheres to the Core Practices of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). All stakeholders—authors, reviewers, and editors—are expected to uphold these standards.

Key policies:

  • Plagiarism: A maximum similarity index of 15% is allowed (excluding references). Plagiarism in any form leads to immediate rejection.
  • Authorship: All listed authors must have made a significant intellectual contribution. Ghost and gift authorship are unacceptable.
  • Conflict of Interest: Authors and reviewers must disclose any competing interests.
  • Data Integrity: Authors may be requested to provide underlying research data. Fabrication or falsification results in a lifetime ban.
  • Ethical Approvals: Research involving human participants or animals must have received appropriate institutional ethics committee approval, cited within the manuscript.
  • Corrections & Retractions: The journal issues corrections for honest errors and retracts articles where misconduct or unreliability is established, following COPE guidelines.

Author contribution statements

CRediT Roles: Common roles include Conceptualization, Methodology, Software, Validation, Formal Analysis, Investigation, Resources, Data Curation, Writing (Original Draft/Review & Editing), Visualization, Supervision, Project Administration, and Funding Acquisition.

Institutional Review Board Statement

In this section, please add the Institutional Review Board Statement and approval number for studies involving humans or animals. You might choose to exclude this statement if the study did not require ethical approval. Please note that the Editorial Office might ask you for further information. Please add “The study was conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki, and approved by the Institutional Review Board (or Ethics Committee) of NAME OF INSTITUTE (protocol code XXX and date of approval).” for studies involving humans. OR “The animal study protocol was approved by the Institutional Review Board (or Ethics Committee) of NAME OF INSTITUTE (protocol code XXX and date of approval).” for studies involving animals. OR “Ethical review and approval were waived for this study due to REASON (please provide a detailed justification).” OR “Not applicable” for studies not involving humans or animals.

Informed Consent Statement

Any research article describing a study involving humans should contain this statement. Please add “Informed consent was obtained from all subjects involved in the study.” OR “Patient consent was waived due to REASON (please provide a detailed justification).” OR “Not applicable.” for studies not involving humans. You might also choose to exclude this statement if the study did not involve humans.

Written informed consent for publication must be obtained from participating patients who can be identified (including by the patients themselves). Please state “Written informed consent has been obtained from the patient(s) to publish this paper” if applicable.

Data Availability Statement

We encourage all authors of articles published in TBJ to share their research data. In this section, please provide details regarding where data supporting reported results can be found, including links to publicly archived datasets analyzed or generated during the study. Where no new data were created, or where data is unavailable due to privacy or ethical restrictions, a statement is still required.

Declaration of Generative AI

Authors must disclose the use of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process by adding a statement at the end of their manuscript in the core manuscript file, before the References list. The statement should be placed in a new section entitled ‘Declaration of Generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process’.

Statement: During the preparation of this work the author(s) used [NAME TOOL / SERVICE] in order to [REASON]. After using this tool/service, the author(s) reviewed and edited the content as needed and take(s) full responsibility for the content of the publication.

This declaration does not apply to the use of basic tools for checking grammar, spelling, references, etc. If there is nothing to disclose, there is no need to add a statement.

Open Access & Copyright

The Bingham Journal is a fully Open Access journal, meaning all content is freely available to readers worldwide without subscription fees. Authors retain copyright of their work and grant the journal right of first publication. Articles are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0), which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited.

Article Processing Charges (APCs): The current APC for the journal is N45,000 or 30 USD. This fee ensures the journal can continue delivering high-quality research in an accessible and sustainable manner. However, authors seeking professional copyediting or printed hard copies will bear those costs separately.

Indexing & Archiving

The journal is actively working towards inclusion in major indexing databases. Currently, it is indexed in:

  • Google Scholar
  • CrossRef
  • Bingham university repository

All published articles are archived in the Bingham University Institutional Repository and preserved via a LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe) system to ensure long-term accessibility.

Submission Guidelines

Manuscript Preparation

Authors should prepare their manuscripts following the APA 7th Edition reference style (or an alternative prescribed style for specific disciplines as indicated per call). Submissions must be in Microsoft Word (.doc/.docx) format, 1.5-spaced, using Times New Roman, size 12.

Structure of a Research Article:

  1. Title page (including full names, affiliations, ORCID iDs, and corresponding author’s email)
  2. Abstract (250 words) with 4–6 keywords
  3. Introduction

Manuscript Length: 5,000–8,000 words inclusive of references, tables, and figures. Short communications should not exceed 3,000 words.

Submission Procedure: All manuscripts must be submitted electronically via the journal’s online portal (link will be provided). A cover letter briefly stating the manuscript’s novelty and confirming that it is not under consideration elsewhere is mandatory.
